Photo ready!

Event and wedding season is in the air!

Here are some makeup tips to look your best in special photos that will last a lifetime!

photo
{Ready for your close-up?!}

1: No Zinc-
Ever wonder why your face appears bright white in photos?! Zinc. The sun protection ingredient zinc is a Physical block, meaning it is a shield over the surface of the skin, and blocks light. The particles cause light to bounce back, so when your camera flash goes off…it reflects off the SPF and you will appear ghostly! So be sure to check your makeup as well and don’t wear makeup with SPF to your night-time events!

2: No chisel contouring-
This isn’t the 80′s! No more contouring! By contouring the cheeks, you apply a dark bronze color in the hollows of the cheeks to make cheek bones seem more pronounced. Don’t do it! It was the look of the past and has the visual in photos of an aged appearance. As we age the space between our jawline and apples of the cheeks loose volume…why would we want to deepen the effect? In a photo, shadows are already casted on the face, and by adding a darker color and chiseling the cheeks…it will cause an increased sunken-in appearance. Which brings me to my next tip, highlighting!

3: Highlight-
Highlighting is a wonderful way to bring attention to the areas you want noticed! Use an iridescent or small particled shimmer powder, stick or gel to Highlight the top of the cheeks. Apply a small amount from the apples of the cheeks to the temple area. In photos this will create the illusion of a pronounced and structured face. Another area that is flattering to highlight is the inner corners of the eyes and the bone right below the eyebrow(brow bone), this opens the eye area. To create the look of a slimmer nose, apply one thin line of highlight down the center of the nose, from bridge to tip. Having a glow and radiance in the skin means it hydrated and youthful, why not make that stand out a bit more!

4: Plump lips-
Create the appearance of a more pronounced plumper pout with concealer…yes concealer! Apply a cover-up all over the lips to even out the tone and prep for lipstick. By putting concealer on the lips before applying lipstick, it’s like creating a blank canvas for your art! It also makes the lipstick color pop and last a lot longer. To create more of a pout…choose a concealer a shade lighter than your skin tone and apply a thin line surrounding the lips, just outside of the lip line. Blend with fingers. This highlights the rim of the lips to make them more defined in photos.

5:Widen eyes-
If you want to create the look of a more open eye, use white eyeliner on the waterline. The water line is the inner rim of the bottom lid. By adding white eyeliner it makes it look like the white of your eye extends down a bigger space then they really do, making the eyes seem more open. Applying black liner makes the eye look thinner and more almond-shaped, which creates more of a sultry exotic look.

The makeup tricks-of-the-trade are endless!

For some celebrities it takes an entire makeup crew to achieve the appearance they are going for! Now you have a whole crew in the palms of your hands, to create just the illusion you are going for to make your desired features stand out in photos!

Summer date night

This San Francisco weather is unbelievable!

Take advantage and treat yourself after work to a nice cold drink! Wondering where to go? These are some of my favorite places, and San Francisco’s best outdoor bars!:

20130502-120756.jpg

620 Jones- My favorite outdoor spot, and SF’s only rooftop patio bar! Diamond in the rough, located in the Tenderloin Dist. Though once you walk through the ivy lined alley to enter, you’ll feel like you’re in an entirely different location. A huge patio outdoor space complete with umbrellas for day, heat lamps for night as well as greenery and classy decor surrounding! Enjoy a drink at the indoor or out door bar. The food is really great at well!

-

20130502-120804.jpg

Chambers- Located in the Phoenix Hotel, this is another one of my go-to spots! Most famously known for their “Be Amazing” sign in lights, behind one of their two bars. Don’t forget the outdoor patio though, it cannot be missed! With the bright colors of the hotel and pool(for hotel guests) lined in “69″ paint/decor…you feel like your walking into a blast from the retro past! But it’s an amazing outdoor area. Lounge in a cabana, or sit in a pool side cushion near a fire pit! Fabulous for a warm summer night and great food and indoor/outdoor dining here as well.

-

20130502-120811.jpg

21st Amendment- A brewery complete with an awesome large open rooftop patio. Enjoy a refreshing watermelon beer, among manyyy other choices! Bar food, amazing beer and super cool warehouse vibe!

-

20130502-120818.jpg

The Fairmont rooftop garden-Go a little classier a sip a cocktail in the Fairmont’s rooftop garden! Gorgeous grounds and views! The Garden even includes four beehives that contain 200,000 honeybees and produce honey, which is served at the hotel’s Laurel Court Restaurant & Bar! Stop by The Tonga Room tiki bar first, for your island inspired cocktail. Than head to the roof!

Off The Grid- Don’t forget the weekly roundup of foodtrucks down at Fort Mason! With their new addition of a bar and lounge outdoor section, it makes for the perfect summer Friday evening! Complete with heat lamps, strung lighting and bar tables.

Enjoy the beautiful weather!

6 skin super foods!

The clear, healthy skin diet!

These are a few of many food super heroes that help nourish, protect and repair your skin and body!

skin
                                              {Kiss unhealthy skin goodbye!}

Blueberries- Help under eye circles and whitening skin.
Blueberries help to increase circulation in skin giving it a great glow and helping prevent the pooling of blood…that may create purple hue under eyes. They also have brightening agents which help the even the tone of skin. As well as being packed with vitamin C antioxidants to help fight against sun damage.

Wild Salmon- Give your skin a moisturized glow and less visible fine lines!
*Wild salmon, not farm-raised* is one of the best food sources for omega-3 fatty acids, which helps keep your skin supple and moisturized. These healthy fats help to nourish the cells and reduce inflammation. Salmon also has selenium, a mineral that protects the skin from sun exposure, as well as tons of vitamin D.

Spinach- Clear up breakouts and have an even toned glow!
This leafy green vegetable is rich in nutrients and antioxidants. Spinach is an amazing source of vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids. The fatty acids moisturize. The most useful vitamins of spinach are vitamin A, C, E, and K. They are amazing for your skin. The antioxidants contained in spinach will clear up acne quickly and provide your skin with a protective shield.

Oysters- Give your skin plump volume and calm acne.
Oysters are a great source of zinc, which aids in skin cell renewal and repair to help give lackluster skin a healthy look. The mineral zinc is an important component of healthy skin, especially for acne sufferers. Zinc acts by controlling the production of oil in the skin, and may also help control some of the hormones that create acne. Helping aid in calming the deep painful breakous!

Tomatoes- Fight sun damage and redness in the skin!
Tomatoes are full of antioxidant vitamins including the best source of the anti-aging lycopene. Lycopene is a powerful source of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, helping to fight damaging environmental agents. The anti-imflamtory properties help to calm redness

Yogurt- Help calm redness and rash-like clustered breakouts.
Yogurt is high in acidophilus probiotic. Acidophilus helps lower the count of yeast in your system. If your body is high in yeast you may experience a numbers of different symptoms…but for the skin you will see candida. Candida is a lot of times mistaken for one having acne, and they don’t realize all they have to do is change their diet to have less moist yeast. Candida can be anywhere on the body, but when on the skin it appears rashy, red, bumpy and a lot of times accompanied by whiteheads. Acidophilus is amazing for the body in many ways, so eat your yogurt!

There you have it! Ones days supply…breakfast, lunch and dinner. The most amazing things you can do to help your skin!

There are times where I have seen a facial client for ages…trying to help repair their acne skin. A lot of those times, it really comes down to making a change in your lifestyle and what you consume to see the ultimate difference!

Acai bowl bliss

The amazing Acai Bowl! acai-bowl-

Finally growing in popularity…the amazing acai berry puree blend is not only insanely healthy but also so delicious!

Picture…a tasty sorbet/soothie…topped with tastey treats. Minus the sugar, dairy and calories…add the pureness of natural fruits and super foods to help your body, brain and skin! I first discovered this to die for refreshing treat in Hawaii, San Francisco has yet to have many places that make them to my Hawaii acai bowl standards! In SF you can find them at Judalicious…but i’ll tell you, once you had the best…you can’t go back!

So I did my research and discovered the easy combination to make the best and healthiest breakfast/desert you’ve ever had…and will leave you craving them all the time!

acai
What you will need:
  • Acai Berry puree- Known superfood full of antioxidants. Acai Berries are too delicate to be imported without perishing(which is why acai bowls are hard to find b/c it is expensive to import). Acai berries are pureed and flash frozen as not to loose the nutrients and vitamins. Look for puree packs in the frozen food/juice section of your health food store.
  • Coconut milk- The creamier version of coconut water, packed with electrolytes. This you can blend with the acai puree to give a sweet creamy texture and boost your energy.
  • Orange juice- Another amazing addition to your base blend. To add a little citrus kick and give it a tart sorbet kind of taste!
…puree in a blender and pop in the freezer for a bit, you may not even need to freeze though…
-topings-
  • Chia seed- Similar to flaxseed and full of fiber and protein.
  • Hemp seed- Mineral rich and also a good source of fiber and protein.
  • Bee pollen- Surprising treat, so sweet! Provides protein, vitamins, minerals and fatty acids. It is said the eating bee pollen with help you during allergy season by introducing your immune system to local allergens. Check out your health food store or farmers market.
  • Goji berry- Crazy super fruit! Insane amount of vitamins and minerals, including calcium, potassium, iron, zinc, vit C, selenium, amino acids and many, many more!
  • …and top with other yummy fruits like banana and strawberry and blueberries…which you can also add to the blended base as well. You can add as much other crunchy toppings as you’d like, such as buckinis, oats, nuts….these are just common ones I’ve had in the past! I also love coconut shavings on mine!
Enjoy your energizing, skin clearing, brain powering, muscle recharging, immune boosting, cold relieving, cell stimulating, refreshing and tasty new treat!!

Hair of a mermaid

waves

…beachy, salty natural waves. Hair that you can only achieve from a day of beach bumming..until now!

I am having major summer withdrawals, especially after Januarys Maui trip to visit my family. There I was reminded, just how much I love the mermaid like hair that the tropical waters bless me with! After that I was determined to find a way to make those bohemian waves possible without frolicking in the ocean.

After some research, and testing different combinations…I have found the perfect DIY at home ocean potion for wavey tresses!

beachy

What I used:

  • 2 teaspoons Sea salt- for salty texture
  • 1 teaspoon Coconut Oil (can be found in a solid form at a natural health food store, now at trader joes for cheap!)- to prevent hair from dying due to sea salt, and amazing beach smell.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Hair gel(optional)- for long lasting hold
  • 2 cups hot water- as a base..hot water to melt coconut oil
  • 2-3 drops Pikake Essential oil- to give tropical beach smell…vanilla or tuberose also sound amazing

Combine all ingredients in any order. Shake thoroughly to blends ingredients, and also before every use. Pour into a spray bottle. You may need to re-heat every now and then. Spray onto dry damp hair and scrunch!. Air dry or blow-dry on low…or put in a braid before sleeping…

And viola! You have beach goddess hair!

Mood mist

Little blue or brown bottles that hold wonderful and incredibly healing scents!mist

Turn these lovely scents into mood enhancing mists!

Essential is extracted from a plant with potent concentrated aromas and medicinal properties. So when you combine these natural oils into a mist, you can create your own custom blended mood face mists or pillow sprays!

How to make your own custom mood mist:

-In a spray bottle, fill to the top with distilled water

-Add 5-7 drops of essential oil

My favorite combined scents are:

For a soothing calming blend- 3 drops ylang-ylang, 2 drops lavender

For a stimulating refreshing blend- 3 drops orange, 2 drops geranium

For a meditative blend- 3 drops rosemary, 2 drops frankincense

The drop amounts vary on how potent you would like your mist to be, and what healing qualities you would like to achieve.

Every essential oil has a different healing effect on the mind and skin. Read this previous blog post of mine to find out the right combo for you:

Essential oil healing and curative qualities

You can spritz the mood mist liberally directly on your face and take deep breaths in. Also spray around the room and on pillows to freshen up!

My favorite trick to turn your face mist into a moisturizing mood mist…is to add a few(3-5) drops of jojoba oil. Shake well before using, and spritz directly on skin…this time not taking a deep breath in.

All of these products can be found at you local or chain health food store.

Be your own little aroma chemist, change your mood and nourish the skin!
